THE THIRD ANNUAL FLUTE FAIRE WILL BE A HIGH-PITCHED EVENT

It's definitely a high pitched event. On Jan. 28 Christopher Newport University Performing Artists Association and the Hampton Roads Flute Association are presenting the third annual Flute Faire.

Patti Watters, one of the Virginia Beach organizers and performers, explained that this is an areawide endeavor.

The local professional flutists from the Virginia Symphony, all the area colleges and the Governor's Magnet School for the Arts have come together to offer a day to be enjoyed by many - young musicians, college flutists, former players and even those who simply enjoy its lyric tones from afar.

Everyone is invited to bring their flute and begin at 9 a.m. with a warm-up class led by Cynthia Decker, second flutist and piccolo player with the Virginia Symphony.

The day continues with Stephanie Jones, principal flute of the Virginia Beach Symphony, flute instructor at the Flute Tooter and certified Suzuki flute teacher.

Jones talks with parents about what to look for in a private music instructor.

Master classes in such specialized areas as the French flute repertoire, junior master classes in festival repertoire, workshops from performing to buying a flute, solo competitions, an adult amateur ensemble reading sessions as well as instrument and music vendors' displays round out the day.

Featured guests in a gala concert at 4 p.m. on the same day include Carol Kniebusch Noe, professor of music at James Madison University, and the JMU Flute Choir.

Also performing are local artists: Debra Cross, Barbara Chapman, Kathy Daniels, Gretchen Ballard and Jennifer Debiec as well as Watters, Decker and Jones.

For more information, call Ballard at 881-9898 or 599-8258.

Registration begins at 8 a.m. at the college campus center. The fee is $10.

NOT A FLUTE CHOIR, but a children's choir.

The Broadway touring company of Andrew Lloyd Webber's ``Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'' is coming to Chrysler Hall in April.

When it comes, it will be giving area youth choirs the opportunity to participate - live and onstage - in this local production.

Two amateur choirs ranging in ages 9 to 14 form an integral element of every performance.

To find these voices, the producers are conducting ``The Dreamcoat Choir Challenge'' in the area on Monday.

The first 16 eligible choirs that call will receive the application and information packet.

The two choirs selected perform in the production during the weeklong engagement at Chrysler Hall.

The very first show composed by Webber and Tim Rice, ``Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat'' retells the Bible story of Joseph and his 11 brothers at the time of the Pharaohs.

``The Dream Coat Choir Challenge'' takes place on Monday from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Lunch is provided. All those interested in participating should call 622-0288.

FEATURING YOUNG instrumentalists is an upcoming concert of the Bay Youth Orchestras. On Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. the Bay Youth Strings and Youth Wind Symphony are presenting a concert in the Price Auditorium of Norfolk Academy.

The strings, conducted by Christina Morton, perform music of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven, and the wind symphony, conducted by Dean Englert, perform works by Vaughan Williams, Handel and Texitor. Admission is $3.50. For more information, call 461-8834 or 498-8734.

FINALLY, THE COMMONWEALTH MUSICAL STAGE is holding a special fund-raising raffle to benefit Virginia's only musical theater. Some of the prizes offered include two round-trip airfares to any USAir destination in the United States or Caribbean, dinner for four at Rockafellers, a Kenwood CD player, jewelry from Lillian Vernon and a gift basket from First Colony Coffee. Tickets are $5 and in Virginia Beach may be purchased at Sandy's Touch of Gold and Audio Video Service Labs. The drawing is on Feb. 5 at the Pavilion Theater following the final performance of ``Good News.'' ILLUSTRATION: Patti Watters
