William McKendrick Garner Sr., 94, of the 1600 block of Elbow Road, died Saturday in a Chesapeake nursing home.
Mr. Garner was born in Westmoreland County, Va., and was the son of the late Albert Wilton and Rosa Edwards Garner, and husband of Betty Sawyer Garner. In his early years he was employed by J.G. Wilson Paint Co. and later with the Ford Motor Company Plant in Norfolk as a striper. He retired as a supervisor in the paint shop at the Norfolk Naval Air Station. He was a member and deacon of the Bethel Baptist Church.
Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Louise G. Butt and Marlene G. Cooke, both of Chesapeake; three stepsons, Robert William Marshall and Wiley Ray Sawyer, both of Chesapeake, and Charles Ray Sawyer of Camden County, N.C.; two sisters, Estelle G. Ward of Chesapeake and Evelyn G. Poindexter of Long Beach, Calif.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday at 11 a.m. in the Bethel Baptist Church, Elbow Road, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Houston F. (Chip) Roberson and the Rev. John Dearing. Burial will follow in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Oman Funeral Home, Great Bridge, and at other times at 308 Great Bridge Blvd., and 304 Constance Drive.
