William Woodroe Black ``Chief Black'', 77, of the 400 block of Gloucester Ave., died Jan. 22, 1995, in the Portsmouth Naval Hospital.
Chief Black, a native of Trenton, S.C., and a veteran of World War II, was retired from the U.S. Navy as a chief boatswain's mate after 30 years of service. He was also retired from the City of Portsmouth as deputy coordinator of Civil Defense and Communications. He was a member of First Lutheran Church and was the widower of Mary Frances Black.
Survivors include a daughter, Mary L. Cummings Mills of Chesapeake; a son, William W. Black Jr. of Portsmouth; two brothers, Thomas H. Black and Francis Black, both of Trenton, S.C.; and one grandchild.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. today at Foster Funeral Home.
