Col. William H. Barba, USMC (Ret.), 81, of the 1300 block of Lakeview Drive, died Jan. 21, 1995, in Virginia Beach.
He was born in Altoona, Pa., and was a member of Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel. A veteran of World War II and Korea, he fought in China, Guadalcanal, New Britain and Korea and retired after 27 years. After retirement from the Marine Corps, Col. Barba taught mathematics at Cox High School and retired from the Virginia Beach public school system after 14 years. He was an avid golfer and a member of the Eagle Haven Men's Golf Association.
Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mildred H. Barba; six daughters, Valerie C. Harrell of Timberville, Va., Susan Tibbles of Anacortes, Wash., Kathy Barba of Montebello, Va., Pamela Shehane of Harrisonburg, Va., Deborah Barba of Asheville, N.C., and Marie Makela of Morgantown, W.Va.; three sons, Col. Richard D. Barba of Statesville, N.C., Col. William L. Barba of College Station, Texas and James Lefty Barba of Virginia Beach; 24 grandchildren; and three great-granchildren.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel, by Father Edward L. Richardson. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Quantico National Cemetery. The family will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, from 7 to 9 p.m. today. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be sent to the Alzheimer's Association, Hampton Roads Chapter (NU)20, The Koger Center, Suite (NU)233, Norfolk, Va. 23502.
