MACARTHUR DINNER WILL PAY HONOR TO 4

The Army's transportation commander, two enlisted personnel and a college cadet will be honored Saturday at the 27th annual Douglas MacArthur Chapter memorial dinner at Fort Story.

Guest speaker and recipient of the chapter's meritorious service award will be Maj. Gen. David A. Whaley, commander of the Army Transportation Center, U.S. Transportation School and chief of transportation for Fort Eustis.

The program begins at 6 p.m. with a reception and concludes with a dinner at the Fort Story Club.

Whaley is a decorated 29-year Army veteran with service in Vietnam, Thailand, Germany and Saudi Arabia, and has been awarded the Bronze Star, Distinguished Service and Meritorious Service medals, among others.

The chapter dinner is held each year to honor the late Gen. Douglas MacArthur, who commanded American forces in World War I, II and the Korean conflict. MacArthur claimed Norfolk as his home, despite being born in Little Rock, Ark.

Also cited for recognition Saturday are Army Specialist Michael F. Dineen, of Boston, Mass., a member of the Military Police Company who has been selected as Fort Story's 1994 soldier of the year.

Cpl. Cynthia Gardner, of Bridgton, Maine, also assigned to the Fort Story Military Police Company, will be recognized as outstanding noncommissioned officer of 1994.

Also singled out for recognition will be Cadet Maj. Brett H. Venable, executive officer of the Monarch Battalion at Old Dominion University. Venable will get the G. William Whitehurst Leadership Award as the ROTC cadet of the year.

Admission to the banquet is $20 per person. Checks should be made payable to the Douglas MacArthur Chapter AUSA and mailed to LTC John Egan, Treasurer, 1728 Rally Drive, Virginia Beach 23454. Reservations may be made by calling 422-7102 no later than Thursday. by CNB
