I keep reading that Democrats in the General Assembly are struggling with the tax cuts that Governor Allen is proposing since they are up for re-election in November. Has it ever occurred to anyone that the pittance of a tax cut, if voted on by Republicans, might actually result in an overwhelming increase in Assembly Democrats in November?
It is ludicrous for a state that is 46th in its tax burden to create severe cuts in education, the arts and other areas that make our state economically strong. And now, adding insult to injury, I learn that Governor Allen has a fatter staff than previous administrations (Friddell column, Jan. 14) while cutting services essential to economic growth.
Voters should let their senators and delegates know that a tax cut is not in Virginia's best interest. (We will ultimately pay for Allen's tax cut anyway, when our local taxes pick up the slack.)
Governor Allen should look in his own back yard before making his politically motivated, short-sighted game-playing a part of our state's budgeting process.
