Duke coach Fred Goldsmith, who led the Blue Devils to a bowl invitation earlier this month, will be the headline speaker at the 49th annual Portsmouth Sports Club Jamboree.
The jamboree will be held March 8 at the Holiday Inn-Portside.
Duke lost to Wisconsin, 34-20, in the Hall of Fame Bowl on Jan. 2 at Tampa, Fla.
Goldsmith, in his first year at Duke, led his team to an 8-4 overall record. The previous season the Blue Devils were 3-8 and the turnaround was the biggest in the country. It earned Goldsmith the Bobby Dodd National Coach of the Year Award.
Goldsmith, a 1967 graduate of the University of Florida, was at Rice for five years before going to Duke. His teams at Rice were 23-31-1 after he inherited a squad that had lost 18 straight.
In 1992, he led Rice to its first winning season in 29 years.
A one-time high school coach, Goldsmith had earlier college coaching stints as an assistant at Arkansas, Florida A&M and the Air Force Academy. He was head coach at Slippery Rock for one year.
Jamboree chairman Jimmy Williams said tickets will go on sale to the general public on Monday. Tickets are $35. by CNB
