NEW LOOK: A new $50,000 facade on Sidney's Pawn Shop enabled the business to stay at the corner of High and Effingham streets.
The building, part of it more than 100 years old, was scheduled for demolition. The city agreed to leave it standing if remodeling steps were taken.
The new facade complements the recently remodeled Phil Brodie Furniture Store in the same block. Designed by architect Kirk Berkeley, the facade is orange and green on gray. Although the front windows appear to have small panes appropriate to the Olde Towne images, they are in fact covered protective metal bars in the shape of window lights.
Sidney's actually is two buildings. The corner structure was built a century ago for a general merchandise store and later was a 24-hour restaurant. The second building is about 90 years old, said Don Wade, an employee who worked with the architect to remodel the front.
Sidney Marcus, store owner, has been in business on High Street since 1957 and in the present location for about 30 years.
MOVE COMPLETE: Central Appliances Services has moved to a storefront building at 425 County St. after Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authority took the land and warehouse on Queen Street that formerly housed the business.
Woodrow ``Woody'' Wood will continue to repair all brands of appliances. He also will sell new Whirlpool appliances.
The business is open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday; 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
SPECIAL SERVICE: A new company, Medical Appointment Transportation Services Inc., offers individual transportation to medical appointments.
Allaine Foster, owner and sole employee of MATS, said the round-trip service costs $10 for the first 10 miles and an additional $10 for the next 10 miles or any portion. A stop to pick up prescription medicines can be incorporated into the trip, Foster said.
Foster said she makes reminder calls to clients to help them remember their medical appointments.
The service is approved by Medicaid, which will be billed by the company; however, the service can be used by anyone in need of transportation.
Although MATS telephones are answered 7:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. daily, Foster said transportation is available at other hours to accommodate clients' schedules.
Phone numbers are 393-4637 and 1-800-996-MATS.
CHILDREN ONLY: Babes 'n Toyland, a store featuring used clothing, equipment and toys for children from newborn to size 14, has opened at Academy Crossing in Churchland.
``We are about 95 percent used,'' said Sharon Devine, who operates the store with her husband, Kenn. ``We have a corner of the store with new items for those who are looking for gifts, mostly for newborns.''
The store is located in a 2,800-square-foot space that once housed a drug store. It is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The telephone number is 483-0988.
CINDI'S CLOSED: A couple of doors away from the new children's store in Academy Crossing, Cindi's Boutique has closed.
The women's clothing store closed at the end of the year.
AROUND THE CLOCK: Commercial and Residential Glass of Virginia, which relocated recently to 2121 High St., offers 24-hour glass replacement service.
Jerry and Debbie Chappell started the business seven years ago but only recently moved to the storefront space, where they are open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday; 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday.
Jerry Chappell guarantees one-day service on replacement jobs.
The phone number is 399-2400.
