CURRITUCK WRESTLES MATCH FROM MANTEO

ONLY IN A SPORT like wrestling can doing good actually hurt your team. Take the case of Manteo's Wes Mosedale this week as he got set to wrestle at 171 against rival Currituck.

A pin by teammate Bryan Thomas at 160 and a scheduled forfeit for Currituck at 189 set up a match-tying scenario for the Redskins. They needed two pins, including one at 171.

Mosedale was whipping first-year wrestler Rene Kindell, an exchange student from Germany, and took a 12-2 lead after the first period. But in wrestling, there is a rule that if a wrestler goes up by 15 points, the match is declared a technical fall and five points are awarded. Manteo needed the six points for the pin, not the five points from a technical fall. Now, Kindell may not be the greatest wrestler in the world, but he knew enough not to get pinned Tuesday night.

Because he avoided the pin, Currituck sewed up a 36-26 win over its Northeastern Conference rival.

``We knew that if he turned him over one more time, he'd have to keep him down,'' said Manteo coach Harvey Hess.

Currituck relied on its lower weights to grab an early 15-0 lead. At 103, Currituck's Jeremy Walker upped his record to 21-5 by pinning Jonathon Hardee in eight seconds. At 112, Currituck's Steven Wilson led 7-0 before registering a fall over Andy Lukonis with 14 seconds left in the second period. In one of the better bouts of the night, Currituck's Ryan Serrano jumped out to a 4-2 lead after two periods, then held on for a 4-3 decision.

Clint Belangia (135), Brandon Ankney (145), and Anthony Tymul (152) all picked up big pins for the Knights (11-8).

``Our lower weight classes have been our strong point all season,'' said Currituck head coach Bill Paisley. ``We always hope to get out to a big lead. But we had some guys come through tonight at the middle weights. Their pins put us in a position to win.''

Manteo uncharacteristically dropped to 3-5 on the season, but it's hard to bounce back when you've lost nine starters from last year's squad.

``It's just about a brand new team,'' said Hess, himself in his first year. ``It's a lot of fun. We've got a lot of young guys this year. Some of these guys are in their first year of wrestling.''

The win was Currituck's second straight over Manteo. The Knights knocked off the Redskins 37-24 in December.

The two teams will see each other again at the Northeastern Conference tournament on February 4 in Roanoke Rapids. by CNB
