Two suspects in an abduction and carjacking Monday in Franklin eluded police Tuesday during a high-speed chase in South Carolina and Georgia.
The car, a 1993 Ford Mustang, was later found abandoned in Glen County, Ga. Police, including the FBI, continued searching for the pair, said Lt. C.A. Butler of the Franklin Police Department.
Police in South Carolina spotted the car along Interstate 95 about 5 a.m. and pursued the suspects at more than 130 mph into Georgia, where Georgia State Police joined the chase. About 6 a.m., however, the officers lost sight of the car when it left the interstate about 35 miles north of the Florida line.
One suspect has been identified as John T. Jones Jr., 18, of Modoc Avenue, Norfolk. The other has not been positively identified.
Jones is charged with abduction, carjacking - a federal offense - and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
Police said the men abducted a woman at gunpoint from the Southampton Shopping Center on Armory Drive Monday about 1 p.m. and drove her car to Suffolk, where they released her unharmed.
