EDUCATE PRISONERS

In the case of Suzanne Kennon (``Do the crime, do the time,'' letter, Jan. 21), taxpayers have not paid for her education. The entire cost of her education has been paid for by a private donor. While incarcerated in the Virginia Correctional Center for Women in Goochland, Sue Kennon has earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and is working on a master's degree, all at the expense of a private citizen. Furthermore, Sue Kennon has worked to teach other inmates at Goochland. Education has given her the will to live a better life, even in the confines of a prison.

As a teacher of incarcerated juveniles at Tidewater Detention Home, I believe in education as a means of offering the possibility of a better life to both juvenile and adult offenders. When a person makes a choice to ``do the crime, do the time,'' let's offer education as an option - as a positive way to spend the time and as a pathway to a better life!
