The use of soft bedding materials may contribute to the deaths
of up to 1,800 infants annually, the Consumer Product Safety
Commission said Wednesday. It found that up to 30 percent of the
6,000 babies who die yearly from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS)
may have suffocated from sleeping on top of soft bedding materials.
GUIDELINES FOR PARENTS
Put infants to sleep on a firm, flat mattress.
Do not place soft, fluffy products - such as pillows, comforters
or sheepskins - beneath infants while they sleep or nap.
Put healthy infants to sleep on their sides or backs.
