Tarmac America Inc. and Teamsters local 822 reached an agreement on a new contract late Tuesday evening, hours before the current contract was set to expire.
Before taking effect, the new contract has to be ratified by Tarmac drivers in Norfolk and Richmond. The tentative agreement provides for wage increases and improved working conditions, Teamsters local 822 President David Vinson said. ``It was a very, very tough negotiation. But I think it's beneficial to the company and the employees.''
A Tarmac representative was unavailable for comment.
Details of the contract were not released since Teamster local members in Richmond and Norfolk have yet to vote on it. The Tarmac contract is negotiated jointly, with Local 822 representing about 50 Tarmac drivers in the Norfolk area and Local 592 representing a similar number who work for Tarmac in the Richmond area.
The leadership of the local unions will recommend that members approve the contract, Vinson said. by CNB
