Members of the Pasquotank County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday unanimously appointed former Sheriff Davis M. Sawyer Jr. as the successor to Commissioner William C. Owens Jr.
``We'll have a swearing-in ceremony at 9:30 a.m. Monday,'' said Chairman Zee B. Lamb.
Sawyer was selected Tuesday by a majority vote of the Pasquotank Democratic Party to complete the two remaining years of Owens' unexpired term.
The former commissioner won election to the General Assembly in November from the state's 1st House District.
When the county board met Thursday to discuss schools, Lamb brought up Sawyer's nomination by the county Democrats as a first order of business.
Commissioner Jimmy Dixon moved to accept the nomination and Commissioner Horace Pritchard seconded.
N.C. state law would have allowed the commissioners to ignore the political nomination and name a successor but the six board members quickly voted without dissent to swear in Sawyer next week. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
