I agree with columnist Cal Thomas (``Cutting PBS' purse strings would not be catastrophic,'' Perspectives, Jan. 21) that PBS should be eliminated because it does not reap enough revenue from Barney dolls to foot its own bills. Mr. Thomas listed several alternatives to PBS' children's programming that are available on cable. For those parents interested in weaning their children from the ``one-sidedly liberal and offensive programming'' of Reading Rainbow and Lambchop, I would like to share the following strategic lines to help get the kids to make the switch:
Nickolodeon: ``Hey kids, let's watch the moronic shows that Grandma wouldn't let me watch 30 years ago.''
Disney: ``Good thing the mermaid disobeyed her father and finally got herself a man!''
Bravo: ``Hey, Cyrano de Bergerac is on again, and this time it's the French version with English subtitles! Wow!''
The Learning Channel: ``Gee, tonight's operation is the reverse tubal ligation. That's the pope's favorite episode!''
American Movie Classics: ``C'mon kids, let's use your secret decoder to decipher the ancient, garbled soundtrack!''
