This year's American Cancer Society Rock-A-Thon really paid off.
Participants in the recent event collected about $11,000, with more expected as pledges are paid. About 100 people rocked from dawn to dusk in the Nansemond-Suffolk Academy cafetorium.
Many of the fund-raisers represented Obici Hospital.
Its radiation and therapy unit raised the greatest amount - $2,176. The Cancer Center came in second, with $1,634.
The Pilot Club of Suffolk raised more than $800, and its final figure is expected to be higher.
Individuals raising most money were Martha Bell, $1,418; Margaret and Sylvester Jones, $473; and Jean Byrd, $320.
Keynote speaker for the event was Joe Morasco, a member of the Board of Directors of the Norfolk chapter of American Cancer Society.
He was among numerous participating survivors of the disease. Fourteen others were honored during the Rock-A-Thon.
Survivors who showed up ranged from one year to 20 years old, said Margaret Smith, a member of the Suffolk Board of Directors and a past president.
Entertainment kept the rockers occupied, and many visitors showed up to keep them company and make donations.
