Susan Vivian Witt Sauer in her 77th year. Mrs. Sauer died February 8, 1995, in her home on Knotts Island, N.C., after an extended illness. She was the daughter of the late Noah & Lucy Witt and was born and raised in Manhelm, W.Va. During WWII, she worked in a defense plant in Baltimore, Maryland. She worked as a gourmet cook for the Navy for many years, before she & her husband became proprietors of Bayvilla Boat Harbor & Diner on Knotts Island.
Mrs. Sauer was very instrumental in organizing the first Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Dept. & was elected President of the Ladies Auxiliary for a time. She had resided in Mountain City, Tenn., for 17 years before returning to Knotts Island in November of 1994.
Survivors include her husband of 50 years, George A. Sauer; 4 sisters, Helen Cathell, Nina Kave, Bessie Wagner & Jesse Long; 2 brothers, Paul Witt & Kraymer Witt; 3 sons, Noble & Donnie Messanger of W.Va., & Gene ``Skip'' Sauer of Mountain City, Tenn.; 2 daughters, Georgia S. Cason of Knotts Island & Ginger L. Johnson of Newfield, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren and numerous nieces & nephews.
With her & her husband's wishes, the body will be turned over to the Medical College of VA in accordance with the Anatomical Gift Act for total organ donation and/or medical science. (Mom don't have a headache!)
There will be a private family memorial service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made in memory of Mrs. Sauer to the Knotts Island Volunteer Fire Department.
