The School Board named William R. Nichols superintendent early Thursday morning.
Nichols, who is now deputy superintendent, will replace C. Fred Bateman, who will retire this summer after 15 years at the helm.
The board spent about seven hours Wednesday night interviewing three candidates, all of whom work for Chesapeake schools.
Nichols, 57, has spent his entire career in Chesapeake.
The board's decision came on a 7-2 vote. Two board members voted instead to conduct a nationwide search.
``I just feel that it was a tough decision to pick a person out of a group of three,'' said board member Mary Korving.
