Nansemond River's Donald Turner, who was a first-team Associated Press Group AA selection, and teammate Wilvern Flythe announced Wednesday that they had signed football letters of intent with Hampton University.
Their signings brings to six the number of South Hampton Roads players joining the Pirates, who are moving to Division I-AA next season.
Turner and Flythe still need qualifying scores on the college board tests for NCAA freshman eligibility, according to Nansemond River coach Jerry Varacallo.
Other area players who have signed with Hampton include Tallwood's John Vann, Norview's Basley Carlisle, Indian River's Shawn Greene and Norcom's Rudy Howard.
Turner, a 5-foot-9, 170-pound defensive back, was also named defensive player of the year on the state coaches association team.
``I really liked the campus, the environment and the atmosphere,'' said Turner, adding that he will also be used as a returner. ``This is a program that will succeed because everyone is very dedicated.''
Flythe, a 6-1, 185-pound defensive end who will likely move to strong safety, joins his brother Darryl at Hampton.
SOCCER SIGNING: Salem's Kirstie Neidlinger became the fourth Beach District girls soccer player to join the University of Alabama's Crimson Tide when she signed a letter of intent Wednesday.
Neidlinger was a second-team All-Tidewater selection last year and a first-team member her sophomore season. She has been a member of the state Olympic Development team for the last four years.
At Alabama, she will join former teammate Angela Young and First Colonial graduates Jill Davis and Amy Rosenbaum. Her new coach - Don Staley - is a former Bayside High coach.
