State officials said Thursday that the first horse outside of South Hampton Roads has died from eating poisoned corn.
Since October, the worst outbreak in a decade of ``moldy corn poisoning'' has killed an estimated 31 horses in Chesapeake and Suffolk. But the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services said Thursday its lab confirmed that a horse from James City County, outside of Williamsburg, also has succumbed to the incurable disease.
Department spokeswoman Elaine Lidholm said inspectors today will check a Virginia feed store suspected of selling the tainted corn. The department so far has not found the source of the other horse deaths. by CNB
