It was perhaps a final indignity for once-proud cars. Already
crushed and waiting to be dropped into a grinder, a pile of junk
cars in Chesapeake caught fire Thursday night and burned for several
hours. The blaze at Jacobson Metal Co. in the 4300 block of Buell
St. was reported shortly after 8 p.m. A witness said it appeared
that as many as 40 cars were burning at one point. The cause of the
fire is under investigation. It was one of two unusual fires
reported Tuesday. The other, a brush fire near Back Bay National
Wildlife Refuge in Virginia Beach, burned for much of the day.
