The school superintendent's replacement could come from as far away as California or could be tapped from the school district's back yard.
The School Board, in a special meeting Monday, said it would begin advertising the position March 1 in national and state professional education publications.
The board also will send special mailings to several nearby departments of education, including those in Maryland, North Carolina and Tennessee.
A replacement will be hired during the last week of May, board chairman Arthur D. Smith said. The new superintendent of the 9,400-student district is scheduled to report for work July 1.
Last Thursday, Superintendent Beverly B. Cox III told the board that health concerns were behind his decision to retire at the end of this school year.
