The Smithfield Police Department soon will be able to add an 11th police officer, thanks to a three-year grant, Police Chief Mark A. Marshall has announced.
The $61,000 grant is part of Cops-Fast, an expedited program for police agencies serving towns with populations under 50,000, and part of the $30 billion federal crime law passed last summer, Marshall said.
In Smithfield, the $61,000 will pay 75 percent of the salary for one new officer over the next three years. The town will pay the remaining 25 percent, Marshall said.
``We asked for two new officers and got one,'' he said. ``Within the next few weeks we'll receive notification as to how the money will be given out. And then we'll start looking at hiring a new officer.''
Smithfield, with a population of 5,200, now has 10 police officers.
Marshall added a 10th officer to the department in October 1992.
``We got rid of a lot of overtime and made some schedule changes to do that,'' he said. ``There was no additional money for a 10th officer, so we're delighted to get this.'' by CNB
