CDR John N. Spartz Jr., USN (Retired), 66, of the 2300 block of Dodd Drive, died Feb. 14, 1995, in a local hospital.
CDR Spartz was a native of Stacyville, Iowa, and a graduate, with bachelor degrees, from Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa, and St. Leo's College, St. Leo, Fla. CDR Spartz entered the Navy in April 1953. He received his initial commission as Ensign in May 1953. He served at various duty stations from Attack Squadron Eighty-five to the USS Constellation (CV 64), Attack Squadron ONE TWO EIGHT, Supreme Allied Commander Atlantic, Naval Air Maintenance Training Command, and Oceana Air Base. CDR Spartz graduated from the Naval Senior Warfare course at Newport, R.I., and held an MBA from Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla. He also attended the Naval War College in Rhode Island.
CDR Spartz was a member of Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Virginia Beach and the Knights of Columbus. He was preceded in death by a son, John Nicholas, III.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruth June Fandel Spartz; three daughters, Kathy Grady of Rockville, Md., Paula Sanders of Virginia Beach, Michele Spartz of Vienna, Va.; four sons, Steven Spartz and Michael Spartz, both of Clermont, Fla., Thomas Spartz of Chesapeake, Joseph Spartz of Orlando, Fla.; three sisters, Mary Klug of Omaha, Neb., Eileen Zeigler of Salina, Kan., Ruth Krammer of Adams, Minn.; three brothers, Paul Spartz of Marion, Iowa, Joseph Spartz of Osage, Iowa and Donald Spartz of Chicago, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.
A funeral mass will be conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 16, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by the Rev. Michael Breslin. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, in Arlington National Cemetery. A rosary service will be held this evening at 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Visitation will be from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday.
