A defective heater started a house fire early Tuesday, displacing the occupant and injuring a firefighter.
Fire units went to the 100 block of S. 12th St. at 3:20 a.m. and remained there for more than two hours. Lt. Craig Abraham suffered minor steam burns on his face, said Lt. Jeff Messinger, spokesman for the Suffolk Fire Department.
An oil space heater in the house had been leaking, and heat ignited oil that had spilled on the floor, Messinger said.
Damage to the house and contents was estimated at $10,000.
Henrietta Spruill, who lived in the house, is staying with her mother. The Suffolk Chapter of the American Red Cross is providing assistance.
