Bowlers are a charitable group and dozens of benefit tournaments are held throughout the season.
One of the finest fund-raisers is the annual IOF Foresters Bowling for Miracles Family Bowl-A-Thon.
It's a national event, usually held in February. Locally Ed West was the chairman and the recent competition was at Plaza Bowl in Virginia Beach.
West said about $750 was pledged here, including $300 he raised personally. Additional contributions can be made by contacting West at 463-0626.
The local bowl-a-thon will benefit Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
IOF Foresters, a non-profit fraternal organization with over 1 million members in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, has sponsored Bowling for Miracles for the past five years and has raised over $4 million for the Children's Miracle Network. The network is an international fund-raising organization benefiting 161 hospitals that treat children.
The grand prize in the bowl-a-thon is a trip for four to Disneyland to attend the June 3-4 Children's Miracle Network telethon. Last year's telethon raised more than $125 million for hospitalized youngsters.
Bowler of the Week honors go to David Marshall, who had the usual distinction of rolling 21 strikes in a row without a perfect game.
Marshall, a 202-average bowler, slammed a 791 series in the Masters Tenpin League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. He closed one game with 10 straight strikes and had 11 in a row in the next, en route to a 296 single.
Getting progressively better, Marshall had 231 and 264 before the 296.
Tenpin topics: The annual tournaments of the Norfolk Bowling Association and the Tidewater Women's Bowling Association are underway. The Dream Team, composed of Edgardo Benedicto, Rolando Consolacion, Joey Arata and Orlando Samonte, paces the NBA first-weekend handicap team scores with 2,437 points plus their handicap of 450 for 2,887. Arata set the pace with a scratch 695. Singles leader is James Williams Jr. with 668 and 124 for 792. W. E. Beard Jr. and Donnie Marlowe are the doubles frontrunners with 1,126 and 316 for 1,442. Chris Wilcox tops all-events with 1,551 and 654 for 2,205. The TWBA tournament, with one week remaining, is split into two divisions. The Why No 11 team paces Division 1 scratch with 2,190 and Ladies On Strike tops handicap with 2,491. Mary Leland leads Division 1 singles in both scratch (653) and handicap (758). Scratch doubles leaders are Traci Martin and Leslie Livesay with 1,220. Handicap leaders are Rika Allen and Patty Allen with 1,411. Livesay had a 267 game and 657 series, the tournament's highest. Teet Cotterell's 264 was the second highest game, also shot in doubles. Joyce Wright is the all-events pacesetter, both scratch (1,828) and handicap (2,020). In Division 2 Jan Bain is the scratch singles leader with 558. Handicap frontrunners are Tracy Jones and Stephanie Nobles, both with 721. Lisa Harvey and Debbie Eagan head scratch doubles with 1,057. Handicap leaders are Pat Anderson and Della Scarbrough with 1,383. Bain leads scratch all events with 1,554. Anderson also tops handicap all events with 2,097. The team leaders are Young and Restless in the scratch division with 1,886 and Hot To Trot in the handicap category with 2,641. . . . Rodney Waterfield joined the 300 Club with a 12-striker in the Pinbusters League at Pinboy's of Military. He had the perfecto between games of 229 and 232 for a 761 series. . . . Robert Suddeth, who averages 159, zipped to 279 for Century honors in a 669 series in the Major/Senior Youth League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. In the Junior League 13-year-old Jason Robinett, who averages 136, tossed a 254 game and 581 series. . . . Dan Bloom slammed a 266 game en route to his 713 in the Monday Nite Intramural League at Little Creek. . . . Kenny Wilson, bowling in the Keith Young Industrial League, pocketed $2,400 for winning the Break the Bank competition at Pinboy's of Western Branch. . . . Dan Hawk had the thrill of hitting his first 600 with 610 in the Monday Nite Mixed League at Pinboy's of Military. He averages 154. . . . Dave Shoun had a record 720 series in the Cornerstone Baptist League at Pinboy's of Norfolk.
Duckpin data: Ronnie Sult and Walter Laughon paired to win the Valentine Doubles Tournament at Victory Lanes with a three-game handicap total of 922. Sult banged out a scratch 462 series. . . . A special three-game exhibition was bowled Saturday at Bowlarama between an upstate team and five outstanding local bowlers. The local team consisted of Sult, Laughon, Tiger Baker, Ronnie Ketchum and Donnie Long. The match, billed as the North vs. the South, will be shown on tape delay by Tidewater Amateur Sports. . . . Betty Louk giant-stepped up the ladder with 83, 93 and 103 in the Thursday Major Trio League. . . . Butch Warren had games of 147, 105 and 131 for 383, his finest set since his return to the lanes. He averages 101, soaring 80 pins over. . . Mixed League. . . . A 191 game was popped by John Murphy Jr. in his 430 set in the Independent Loafers League. . . . Paul Sandefur chalked up a 181 single en route to his 464 series in the Elimination Doubles League. Both were league records. . . . The second round of the ``21'' Tournament at Victory Lanes will be bowled at 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 5. . . . Entry blanks are now out for the State Tournament, scheduled this year at Bowlarama.
