The Dare County Board of Commissioners on Monday approved a $147,000 appropriation to begin the first planning phase of a proposed government complex design.
The board vote was 6-1. Commissioner Shirley Hassell cast the lone opposing vote. Phase I is expected to be completed by August.
Next, the Capital Improvements Committee will begin selecting a site for the new buildings. The commission's vice chairman, Clarence Skinner, has said the complex will not be built without a consensus of public support.
Also on Monday, commissioners adopted a resolution requesting that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conduct feasibility studies for improving navigation at Walter Slough Channel and Sandy Point - Durants - Channel.
More than 2,000 vessels depend on Walter Slough for access to Oregon Inlet, commissioners said. Shoaling has caused the channel to shallow considerably. by CNB
