MARINE BACK ON WASP; HAD EJECTED OVER ATLANTIC

A Marine Corps pilot is safely back aboard the Norfolk-based amphibious assault ship Wasp after he ejected over the North Atlantic from an AV-8B Harrier jet during an attempted liftoff on Saturday.

The aircraft, capable of vertical takeoffs and landings, apparently developed engine problems and went over the side of the helicopter carrier about 7 a.m.

Maj. Curtis Manzie, based at Cherry Point, N.C., was recovered unharmed. He is assigned to Marine Attack Squadron 542.

Manzie was participating in routine training in the North Atlantic in preparation for NATO Exercise ``Strong Resolve,'' scheduled to begin in Norway in two weeks.
