BAYSIDE GIRLS BLAST FIRST COLONIAL THE MARLINS WILL MEET KEMPSVILLE IN A BEACH SEMIFINAL ON WEDNESDAY.

The Bayside girls basketball team gave itself a much-needed charge of momentum Monday with a dominating 70-52 victory over First Colonial in the first round of the Beach District tournament at Ocean Lakes.

Had the Marlins defeated the Patriots last week instead of losing to them in overtime, Bayside would have found itself in the bracket opposite Kempsville.

Now, Bayside will have to face the area's best team in a Wednesday semifinal at Tallwood. But with what was arguably its best effort of the season, at least there is reason for hope.

The Chiefs blasted Cox, 86-43, to advance, while Salem and Princess Anne each won to advance to a Thursday semifinal at Tallwood.

``We were determined to beat (First Colonial) tonight,'' said Marlins guard Carolyn Zanelli, who finished with 21 points. ``We played as a team tonight.

``But we're in the tough bracket with Kempsville. I just hope we can play as well as we did tonight and maybe give them a run for their money.''

Bayside (13-10) opened the game with a run of its own, jumping to a 12-0 lead, fueled by two Christy Bryant 3-pointers that forced First Colonial (11-8) to change its defense.

But the Patriots refused to fold and ended the period closing the gap to 12-10.

From there, Bayside was able to find plenty of holes in the trapping zone press the Patriots employed the rest of the game.

``We had to play a zone, and we suffered (in it) from a lack of communication,'' Patriots coach Sandy Bartle said.

Bayside increased its lead to 11 after three quarters and turned on the heat in the final period.

Bryant led the charge in the fourth, scoring six of her game-high 26. She also finished with six steals. Zanelli also had six in the fourth, while Dawn Bell dished out six assists.

First Colonial was led by Katy Walters with 18. Alija Pittenger had 14.
