BURKS L. HAMNER JR.

Burks L. Hamner Jr., 87, of Virginia Beach, died Feb. 20, 1995, in Virginia Beach.

He was active in the resort hotel field and managed the Palma Ceia Golf and Country Club in Tampa, Fla. Mr. Hamner managed the Cavalier Beach Club and was the general manager of the Cavalier Hotel before moving to Wrightsville Beach, N.C., in 1963, where he opened the Blockade Runner Motor Hotel and served as the general manager and vice president of East Coast Hotels Inc. He was connected with that hotel until his retirement in 1980, when he returned to his home in Virginia Beach.

Mr. Hamner graduated from Georgia Military Academy and attended the University of Florida and the Tampa Business College. He was born in Kansas City, Mo., and grew up in Tampa. He was a veteran of World War II, having served as a lieutenant in the USNR. Mr. Hamner served as a past president of the Virginia Beach Hotel Association, the past president of the North Carolina Hotel Association, director at-large of the Master Hosts International and was a member of the North Carolina Travel Council for a number of years. He was also a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Virginia Beach.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Webb Hamner; a son, B. Latham Hamner IV of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Jean Hamner Hoggard of Gainesville, Ga.; and several nieces and nephews.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 11 a.m. in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Georgeanna Brabban Johnson. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
