The grant application to preserve Suffolk's historic railway station has been presented to the Virginia Department of Transportation, and we would like to thank all of the many enthusiastic supporters who helped us complete this important step in the process of saving the station.
The SOS (Save Our Station) Committee received almost 400 letters of support from people of all walks of life, and letters are still coming in. Although we won't know for several months whether our application is accepted, we feel fortunate to have shared in a project in which so many people came forward and showed that Suffolk has not forgotten its past and that community pride in its heritage and history remains intact.
We extend a special thanks to Del. Robert Nelms, whose efforts at the state level helped make others aware of our quest, The Virginian-Pilot and Suffolk News-Herald for their generous coverage and support, members of the Suffolk-Nansemond Historical Society for their tireless letter writing, Seaboard Construction for securing the station after the November fire, Suffolk City Council for its support and funding commitment, city staff for perseverance with paperwork preparation, and all the wonderful individuals too numerous to name who took the time to write letters of support.
The SOS Committee is now beginning its fund-raising efforts to raise our local share of the grant, and we invite all of you to participate. If you can help by donating time or money, or you just want to know more about all of this, please give us a call. We'd love to have you all aboard!
