DEEP CREEK BOYS, BAYSIDE GIRLS TRACK VICTORS

The Deep Creek boys and the Bayside girls used speed to improve the leads they built in the field events Monday to win team titles at the Eastern Region meet Wednesday at Todd Stadium.

Jason Waters won the high hurdles and Deodus Harrell took the 300-meter run as the Hornets amassed 78 1/2 points. Menchville was second with 67 and Churchland third with 43.

Waters - winner of the high, long and triple jumps Monday - had a 7.4-second clocking, 0.1 ahead of Western Branch's Tony Smith. Harrell ran a 35.1 in the 300, 0.1 seconds ahead of Churchland's Greg Boothe, who won the 55 run. Harrell also ran the lead leg on the Hornets' winning 800-relay squad.

``Ten years of hard work has paid off,'' Deep Creek coach Richard Cox said. ``This is a super group of kids.''

Lafayette's Seneca Lassiter won the 1,000 and the 1,600. His 2:28.2 time in the 1,000 shattered by 3.2 seconds the mark set by Menchville's Tyrone Tucker in 1983.

First Colonial's Dan Baxley was second in the 500.

Although sophomore Lashonda Cutchin won the 55 and 300 runs and anchored the winning 800-relay team, Bayside needed a third-place finish in the 1,600 relay to clinch the girls title with 60 points.

``I'm really happy,'' said the Marlins' Michelle Thompson, who anchored the 1,600 relay. ``That's the fastest I've ever run.''

Denbigh was second with 57 points and Salem followed with 47.

Kellam's Jamie Cornish paced the 3,200 run and was second in the 1,600.

Kempsville's Charlette Fayton placed second in the high hurdles, Western Branch's Meredith Turnage was third in the 1,600 and Princess Anne's Megan Kaminski was third in the 3,200 and fourth in the 1,600.

The top six finishers in each event advance to the state Group AAA meet next week at George Mason University in Fairfax. by CNB
