Firefighters rescued eight children and one adult Friday morning from a burning house in the 300 block of W. 36th St.
All the children were found huddled under a second-floor window, but were unable to escape because of heavy smoke.
Firefighters were able to locate the children and hand them down the stairs, said Capt. Lonnie Steadman of the Norfolk Fire Department. Steadman said the firefighters arrived just in time.
``Two or three minutes one way or the other could have made a big difference,'' Steadman said.
The fire is believed to have originated in a downstairs sofa when some of the children were playing with matches, Steadman said.
A woman in the house was treated for smoke inhalation and was released from a hospital, Steadman said. Units from three fire stations responded to the blaze at about 8:20 a.m.
