EASY SOLUTIONS TO TRICKY TASKS

THE FEB. 21 issue of Woman's Day magazine offers 50 easy solutions to everyday problems. Here are our favorites:

Best way to scrub mildew off a shower curtain: Put the curtain in the washing machine along with two or three towels. Fill with warm water, add detergent and 1/2 cup baking soda. Put one cup vinegar in the rinse cycle to prevent further mold from forming. Hang on shower rod to dry.

Best way to tighten loose knobs on furniture: Unscrew the knob and coat the screw with clear fingernail polish or shellac. Reattach the knob and let the polish harden.

Fastest way to dust houseplants: Blow the dust off with a hair dryer set on cool. After you finish, mist tropical plants like gardenias and ferns. EVERYDAY ELEGANCE

You can really clean up with Vanity Fair napkins.

The makers of the napkins will award more than $35,000 in cash and prizes to the winners of ``The Vanity Fair Everyday Elegance Contest.''

To enter, you must describe, in 25 words or less, how to add elegance to everyday life in any one of these four categories: interior design, tabletop settings, entertaining or cooking.

(My entry in any of the categories might read something like this: ``Put the kids to bed early, put the dog in the backyard and turn off the TV.'')

Entries must be postmarked on or before May 31. For more information, look for contest promotions in grocery stores or write to Vanity Fair Everyday Elegance Contest, Box 7165, Clinton, Iowa 53736-7165. by CNB
