Checks went into the mail on Friday to the winners in the 38th annual Tidewater Women's Bowling Association Tournament - and the payout is an all-time high.
Winners will split up $11,958.96.
``We've had a higher number of entries before but the prize fund is the highest ever,'' said TWBA secretary Reba Callis. ``This was one of our better entries, too. We had 176 teams, 696 in singles and 348 in doubles.''
Not a single champion was able to repeat.
The coveted scratch all-events title in Division 1 went to Leslie Livesay with 1,880. The handicap all-events winner was Joyce Wright with 2,020.
Strike Back, captained by Regina Cullom, finished first among the Division 1 scratch teams with 2,265. Handicap honors went to the Hampton Roads Strokers, captained by Jo Crawford. The Strokers had 2,534.
Livesay also paired with Traci Martin to win Division 1 scratch doubles with 1,220. Patty Allen and Rika Allen teamed to win handicap doubles with 1,411.
Division 1 scratch singles went to Dot Dy with 668. Handicap winner was Mary Leland with 758. Leland was the scratch runner-up with 653.
The Division 2 scratch all-events champion was Julia Henry with 1,646. She finished third in the handicap category behind Pat Anderson (2,097) and Stephanie Nobles (2,063) with 2,051.
Julia Henry grabbed first in both scratch (594) and handicap (729) in Division 2 singles. In scratch doubles Lisa Harvey and Debbie Eagan were the champs with 1,057. They were second in handicap, 13 pins behind winners Anderson and Della Scarbrough at 1,383.
The Jokers, captained by Margaret Darling, won the Division 2 scratch team title with 1,917. Hot to Trot, captained by Jane Sawyer, won the handicap category with 2,641.
Dy's 668 was the tournament's highest series and Livesay's 267 was top game. The best in Division 2 were Mary Kay Morgan's 648 series and Pat Coleman's 241 game.
The Norfolk Bowling Association city tenpin tournament concluded its second week's action with two changes from the first-week leaders.
Michael Jordan fired a 627 series with 192 handicap for an 819 total in singles. He unseated first-week pacesetter James Williams Jr. with 792.
In doubles Garland Self and Robert Edwards shot 1,169 with 335 handicap for a 1,504 total. First-week leaders W.E. Beard Jr. and Donnie Marlowe had 1,442.
Chris Wilcox continues to lead in all-events with 2,205, tossing 1,551 for his nine games with 654 pins handicap.
The Dream Team also remains in the lead with 2,887.
The Portsmouth City Women's tenpin tournament will start a two-weekend run at Scott Center in the Norfolk Naval Shipyard on Saturday, March 4. Opening ceremonies are scheduled at 11:15 a.m.
Bowler of the Week honors go to Gina Forehand, who has moved among an elite group of local women tenpin league bowlers with more than one 700 series.
Only 27 women bowlers have ever posted 700 series in area leagues with Forehand, Fran Sansone, Carolyn Cotterell, Edie Ketaner, Donna Luck and Janet Hall in a select circle of six able to accomplish the feat more than once.
Forehand fired 704 in the Thursday Nite Mixed League at Plaza Bowl, slamming a 267 game in the series. She had nine strikes in a row and missed a one-pinner. She nearly accomplished a pair of 700s in a single week, chalking up 691 in the Screwballs League at Pinboy's of Norfolk.
Duckpin data: The North team, powered by 222 games by Andy Hite and Tommy Weaver Jr., clobbered the South in the All-Star exhibition. Weaver had a six-header in his game. But, promises Bowlarama proprietor Pat Sheets, the South will rise again. The match was shown by Tidewater Amateur Sports on Saturday night and will be shown again tonight at 7 p.m.. . . . The national Star of the Month award in the Pee Wee Division for boys in December was won by five-year-old David Nickelson of the Victory Youth League. He bowled a 113 game. In the same league last week Jason Culpepper, who averages 108, fired a 170 game in a 381 series. . . . Pete Pappas won the Up-the-Ladder Tournament at Bowlarama. . . . The February Virginia Pro Tour at Bowlarama was captured by Tiger Baker. Baker also led the qualifying round with a record 1,145 block. In the pro-am Larry Cubilla paced the pros and Charlie Goodall walked off with top amateur prize of $100 with 880. Ray Ketchum was runnerup with 867, Boyd Brian and Jackie Adams tied for third with 864, and Carl Ketchum and Keith Long tied for fifth with 863. . . . Bobby Green won a ring from the National Duckpin Congress with his 443 series in the Naval Shipyard League at Victory Lanes. He averages 102 and cracked out a 161 game. In the same league first-year bowler Ben Goff upped his average over the 100 mark with a 152 game. . . . Catherine Charlton converted a chevron-winning 5-7-10 spare in the Wednesday VPA Doubles League. . . . Usually it's youth bowler Kendra Allen in the news but her grandmother, Jeanette Duncan, was the headliner this week. She had a 155 game and a 428 series in the Thursday Morning Mixed League.
Tenpin topics: Steve Boesdorfer is the newest 300 shooter, firing his 12-striker in the Lucky Strikers League at Plaza Bowl in a 709 series. . . . . Pam Westfall barely missed the ultra exclusive 300 Game Club for women with a 277 in the Saturday Nite Classic League at Pinboy's of Chesapeake. She had a seven count on a Brooklyn hit in the sixth frame for her only non-strike. The big game followed behind 216 and 184 for a 677 series. It was the second highest series ever for Westfall and her best single. In the 184 game she converted the 7-8-10. . . . Three other near 300 games were registered at Pinboy's of Norfolk. Ken Paige left the 3-6 on his last pitch in a 298 in the Charles Peete League. Leslie Livesay came up with the 1-2-4-10 in a 296 game and 673 series in the Funseekers League. Warren Hiteshew had 11 strikes in a row en route to a 290 in the Industrial League. . . . Nancy Stalcup fashioned a 256 game on the way to her 619 series in the Thursday Nite Funseekers League at Pinboy's of Lynnhaven. . . . Larry Martinez's sizzling 782 in the Tuesday Mixed Majors at Plaza included a 289 and a whopping two-game start of 547. . . averages 145, banged out a 225 game and 585 series. . . . Jerry Martin posted an all-spare 180 in the Industrial League at the same center. . . . Deanna Stowe pitched an all-spare 183 in the Cosmopolitan League at Pinboy's of Norfolk. . . . Other gems of the week: Martin Harrington's 287 in the TGIF; Mike Smith's 286 and Sam Lanier's 278, both in the Playmates League; Randy Rose's 278 in the Monday Scratch Doubles; Eric Gallup's 289 in a 773 series in the Tuesday Rejects League; and junior bowler Nick McGuire, who gained Century Club membership with a 264 in the Pinboy's of Norfolk Junior/Senior/Major League.
