EDGAR S. EVERHART JR.

Edgar S. Everhart Jr., 82, a prominent area business man and civic leader, died on Feb. 27 at his home in Norfolk.

A resident of Hampton Roads since the 1940s, he was born in Greensburg, Pa. and was raised in the Harrisburg area. After attending Dartmouth and Duke Universities, he worked for Bethlehem Steel Corporation beginning in 1935, leaving as a foreman at the Sparrow's Point plant in Baltimore to join the Navy at the onset of the second World War. He was stationed at Norfolk, retiring as Lt. Commander in 1946. In that year, he co-founded Associated Naval Architects on the Western Branch of the Elizabeth River in the West Norfolk section of what is now Portsmouth. Initially a builder of small wooden pleasure craft, Associated Naval Architects converted primarily to ship repair in 1959. Mr. Everhart was Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Executive Officer at the time of his death.

Mr. Everhart was involved in other area businesses, serving as trustee for National Welding Supply, Fargo Moving Company, and as Chairman of the Board of Atlantic Permanent Savings and Loan. He was Chairman of the Portsmouth Chamber of Commerce Committee on Education in the late 1950s and subsequently the Chamber's Director and also Director of the Portsmouth area United Fund. He was President of the American Boatbuilder's and Repairers Association in 1966.

Active in the Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry of Trinity church and St. Christopher's Church in Portsmouth, where he was also senior warden and choir director.

Mr. Everhart demonstrated a strong interest in academic excellence, serving on the Board of Visitors of Old Dominion University from 1970-1978 and its Rector from 1976-1978. He was also a judge for the Ledger-Star's Scholastic Achievement Scholarship for several years.

Mr. Everhart ran unsuccessfully as a Republican candidate for State Senate in 1965.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Helen Everhart of Norfolk; four children, Katharine P. Paull of Los Angeles, Anne C. Bradley of Great Falls, Va., Brandt C. Everhart of Chesapeake and Dr. James E. Everhart of Bethesda, Md.; one brother, Dr. Wilson C. Everhart of Mechanicsburg, Pa., five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Churchland. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Christopher's or to Christ and St. Luke's Church in Norfolk. ILLUSTRATION: Photo
