Brigadier General Thad A. Broom Sr., 88, U.S. Army (Ret.), of 5208 Shore Breeze Court, died Feb. 27, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital.
A native of Spartanburg, S.C., General Broom attended Wofford College in that city and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1930, was commissioned in the Infantry and detailed to the Quartermaster Corps in 1938. During World War II, he was promoted to the rank of Colonel and served at Quartermaster Headquarters XVI Corps, assigned to the US Ninth Army in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. After VE day he was with the German Occupation forces until August 1946 when appointed to the Chief military Personnel Branch, Office of the Quartermaster General. Other assignments included Quartermaster, US Army forces Antilles, Puerto Rico, Quartermaster Fort Monroe, Va., Commanding Officer Richmond Quartermaster Depot, and Quartermaster US Army Forces Far East. He retired June 30, 1960.
His awards include the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, French Croix de Guerre medal with palm and the Republic of Korea ULCHI distinguished service medal with Gold Star.
General Broom had been a resident of Virginia Beach since 1969. He was a member of Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church, the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Retired Officers Association and the Military Order of the World Wars.
He is survived by a daughter, Claudia B. Hendren of Virginia Beach; two sons, Thad A. Broom Jr. of Virginia Beach and Robert K. Broom of Newport News; a stepson, Cary Wingfield Raditz of Silver Spring, Md.; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and three stepgrandchildren.
A Church service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday in Eastern Shore Chapel Episcopal Church in Virginia Beach by the Rev. Gary Rowe. Burial will be in Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery with full military honors. Visitation will be Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Kempsville Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 62345, Virginia Beach, Va. 23462. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, is handling arrangements.
