CAR ENGINE STARTS HOUSE FIRE

A man repairing his vehicle in his driveway was injured Sunday when the engine backfired, starting a fire that spread to a neighbor's house, fire officials said.

The incident occurred about 6:50 p.m. in the 2100 block of Florida Ave. Theophlise Lawrence, 64, was taken to the emergency room at Obici Hospital with second-degree burns on his right arm. He was released Monday morning, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Lawrence's vehicle, a 1981 Dodge van, and the neighbor's house were heavily damaged.
