A 72-year-old man hit by a stray bullet over the weekend was in fair condition Monday at Obici Hospital, a hospital spokeswoman said.
O'Dell Thomas of the 1700 block of Freeney Ave. was shot in the right hip while sitting in his kitchen Friday about 6:30 p.m., said police spokesman Mike Simpkins.
The incident started when two men approached Thomas' neighbor, Anthony Jones, as Jones got into his car in the 1800 block of Freeney Ave. One man tried to open the passenger-side door, and the other tapped on the driver's window with a gun, Simpkins said. Jones backed the car up and sped away as the gunman fired four or five shots.
Delbert Javon King, 18, of the 800 block of Second Ave., was arrested and charged with use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting at an occupied vehicle, shooting into an occupied building and malicious wounding.
King was being held in Western Tidewater Regional Jail without bail Monday afternoon. Police are searching for the second suspect.
