CHURCHLAND'S ROUT COMES WITH HEAVY PRICE

Churchland may have taken a beating in the first round of the girls Eastern Region basketball tournament, but it wasn't at the hands of visiting Princess Anne.

The Truckers, who whipped the Cavaliers, 84-36, lost two players to injuries in the final five minutes of the game.

Freshman reserve Shelly Singleton was taken away by ambulance with 5:02 to go after being hit in the face when a teammate tried to save a loose ball from going out of bounds.

Two minutes later, Summer Spiedell left the game for the hospital after tripping over her own feet and cutting her eye in the fall.

However, Churchland's (20-5) Kizzy Butler was the one who inflicted the most pain. The senior guard scored 16 points - 14 in the first half - and dished out 10 assists as the Truckers advanced to Wednesday's semifinal game against Hampton, a 63-42 winner over Lake Taylor.

Wednesday's winner automatically advances to the state playoffs in Lynchburg.

``I was just open,'' said Butler, who got most of her points on the fast break.

In the second half, it was a different story. Though she had plenty of fast-break scoring opportunities, Butler decided to pass off instead.

``I was going for the double-double,'' she said.

Butler got all 10 assists in the second half and didn't wait long to get started. She assisted on 14 points in a 21-10 third quarter run as the Truckers pulled away from a 38-17 halftime lead.

``We were focused on executing our offense,'' Churchland coach Duke Conrad said.

``And of course, Kizzy, tonight, was exceptional.'' by CNB
