Parents and Friends of Exceptional children, a public education support group with a focus on children with special needs, held a poster and essay contest in February to promote awareness of disabilities.
The theme for the contest was ``If You Can Do It, So Can I.''
Essay winners were:
Kindergarten through third grade: Lynn Thompson, Windsor Elementary, first; Brittany Brouillard, Hardy Elementary, second; Wesley Andersen, Windsor, third; honorable mention Rebecca Skinner and Cheryl Kelly, both Windsor.
Fourth and fifth grades: Janet Jones, Hardy Elementary, first; Derreck Darden, Hardy, second; Jenna Abernathy, Carrollton, third; honorable mention Natasha Smith and Lekia Robinson, both Carrollton.
High school (all Smithfield High): Earnest Urquhart, first; Autumn Lawsen, second; Timothy Bailey, third; honorable mention Louis Batten and Gerald Almond.
Poster winners were:
Elementary: a class entry by Brandon Shivers, Latoya Brown, Medina Claggett, Robert Batten and Angel Ellis, Carrollton Elementary, first; Lauren Jackson, Carrollton, second; Jimmie Miller, Hardy Elementary, third; honorable mention Pal's class and Valerie Turner's class at Carrollton.
Middle school: multihandicapped support class at Smithfield Middle won both first and second place.
High school (all Smithfield): Jennifer Cutchins, first; Bobbie Jo Fridley, second; Calvin L. Taylor, third; honorable mention Melissa Evans.
First-place winners in each category received a $50 savings bond. Group prizes were given to the best class entries. Local merchants and restaurants provided prizes to other participants. by CNB
