John Edward ``Big Apple'' Thornton of the 700 block of Crystal Ave., died Feb. 28, 1995, in DePaul Medical Center.
Mr. Thornton was born in Reidsville, N.C., and retired on Dec. 1, 1984, from the ILA (NU)1248 as a gang leader after 27 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church Lamberts Point and the Male Usher Board.
Survivors include his wife, Alice L. Thornton; a stepson, Floyd M. Murden Sr. of Norfolk; a sister, Grace Thornton, and two brothers, James Thornton and Dock Thornton, all of Reidsville; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Murden of Norfolk; and a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, Irene and Sam Thornton.
A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in First Baptist Church Lamberts Point by the Rev. Anthony Paige. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. The body will be placed in church at 10 a.m. Saturday. The family will assemble at his residence. Hale Funeral Home, Norfolk, is handling arrangements. ILLUSTRATION: Personal Photo
