A pilot was rescued early today after his small plane crashed into the Potomac River just off Sandy Point near the Quantico Marine Corps Reservation in Northern Virginia, according to 5th Coast Guard District in Portsmouth.
James W. Milroy of Albuquerque, N.M., was found unhurt and was hoisted aboard one of two Maryland State Police helicopters which responded along with Coast Guard and municipal rescue boats from Maryland.
After the crash, Milroy was able to radio a commercial airliner which relayed the information to the Federal Aviation Administration in Richmond. The FAA, in turn, called the Coast Guard.
Milroy was flying from Hyde Field in Tippett, Md., to Blackstone Airport when his single-engine Cessna developed engine problems and crashed shortly before 1 a.m. He was rescued within 30 minutes and taken to Prince George's County Hospital for observation.
