WILLIAM A. WARD SR.

Mr. William Alpheus Ward Sr., 87, died Sunday, March 5, 1995, at Hampton Woods Nursing Home in Jackson, N.C.

Mr. Ward, a Rich Square native, was the son of the late William Allen Ward and Hattie Elliott Ward of Eagletown outside of Rich Square. He was the husband of Grace Vick Ward.

After attending Guilford College during the late 1920's, he worked in a medical research laboratory at the University of Pennsylvania for several years. During World War II, he worked as an electrician at naval yards in Wilmington, Del. and Portsmouth, Va. He was self-employed, mostly as a salesman in the 1940's and 1950's, was the Rich Square town manager and assistant chief of police during the 1960's, and worked part time at Valley Pine Country Club after his retirement during the 1970's. Though he was raised a Quaker, he became a Baptist after his marriage. He was a member of the Rich Square Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and spent many years singing in the choir at his church, an interest acquired singing in the Acappella Choir at Guilford College.

Mr. Ward is survived by his wife of 61 years, Grace Ward; a daughter, Trudy Ward Parker and son-in-law, John Wilmer Parker Jr. of Edenton, N.C.; a son, William Alpheus Ward Jr. and daughter-in-law, Cheryl Litchfield Ward of Raleigh, N.C.; four grandchildren, Jacqueline Parker Copeland, John Wilmer Parker III, George Alan Parker and Eric Elliott Ward; six great-grandchildren; three brothers, George Taylor Ward and sister-in-law, Lucille Davis Ward of Hamilton, N.C., Gilbert Shirley Ward and sister-in-law, Muriel Brehm Ward of Sarasota, Fla. and Robert Curtis Ward and sister-in-law, Charlotte Dudley Ward of Portsmouth.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Rich Square Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Rogers. Burial will follow at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Rich Square. The family will receive friends at the Jackson Funeral Home in Jackson, N.C. from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. Memorial contributions may be made to the Rich Square Baptist Church, P.O.
