Isle of Wight parents of local students who learn quicker when they hear their lessons rather than see them now have a choice when it comes to homework.
Two local women, Becky Gwaltney and Gail Keane, volunteers from Trinity United Methodist Church, have recorded an audio tape library of the fourth- and fifth-grade social studies books and the fourth-grade science book.
Parents can provide a blank tape to the Parent Center, at the School Board Annex near the Isle of Wight Courthouse, or to their children's homeroom teachers, and the social studies or science chapters the children are studying can be copied onto tape.
Parents may come to the Parent Center, off Poorhouse Road at 17055 Education Drive, between 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Mondays or from noon to 5:30 p.m. Thursdays. Appointments should be scheduled for other times.
The service, which can help students who are more auditory than visual learners, is free and has been made possible by the volunteer efforts of Gwaltney and Keane, says Roberta Smith, parent-community specialist at the Parent Center.
