Nathaniel James Babb, 90, of the 800 block of Orville Ave., died March 6, 1995, in Norfolk.
Mr. Babb was born in Norfolk County, Chesapeake, and was a retired car yard superintendent for Norfolk and Southern Railroad after 43 years of service. He was a member of South Norfolk Baptist Church, Chesapeake. He was a deacon and Sunday School teacher and served for many years as the Sunday School superintendent of the church. He served as president of Norfolk and Southern Employees Credit Union for several years. Mr. Babb was a former city councilman and served from 1953-1957 as the mayor of the city of South Norfolk.
Survivors include his wife, Martha Stallings Babb; one son, Judge Robert F. Babb of Portsmouth; one brother, F. Wilson Babb of Norfolk; two grandchildren, Robert F. Babb Jr. of Richmond and Mary Babb Morris of Charlottesville; and four great-grandchildren.
The graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Roger Mardis and the Rev. Frank Hughes Jr. in Churchland Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. at The Meadows, 220 Rainbow Lane, Chesapeake. Memorial contributions may be made to the South Norfolk Baptist Church.
