John Osteen, principal at Lake Taylor High School, has been elected to a four-year term on the board of directors of the nation's largest school leadership organization, the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Osteen, who has been at Lake Taylor since 1988, was elected last month at the NASSP's 79th annual convention in San Antonio, Texas. He is one of two representatives serving the organization's Region 3, which covers Virginia, the District of Columbia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee.
During his 29-year career, Osteen has served as Rosemont Junior High School's history department chairman, Maury High School's assistant principal and the principal at Madison Secondary Alternative School and Norview Middle School. He earned his undergraduate degree in 1965 from Anderson (Ind.) University and a master's degree from the College of William and Mary in 1974.
Based in Reston, the professional education organization is comprised of more than 42,000 middle level and high school principals, assistant principals and university professors. It represents their views to Congress and the Department of Education, provides professional development and works on special projects to improve education in secondary schools. In addition, it administers the National Honor Society and the National Association of Student Councils.
