Dr. L.D. Britt has been named to the Brickhouse Chair in Surgery at Eastern Virginia Medical School.
Britt, professor and chairman of general surgery at EVMS, is the first to hold the honorary title, which was established following a $600,000 gift to EVMS from the estate of Edward J. Brickhouse, a Norfolk businessman and philanthropist.
Funds from the Brickhouse endowment will support educational and research activities at the medical school.
OFFICERS
Edward W. Wolcott of Norfolk has been elected president of the Hampton Roads Naval Historical Foundation. He succeeds Adm. Ralph W. Cousins, who served for five years.
The foundation is a non-profit organization
that supports the collection and preservation of naval and maritime artifacts relating to the Hampton Roads area. The organization also supports the efforts of the Hampton Roads Naval Museum to promote the study of local naval history.
MILITARY PEOPLE
Navy Seaman Zane Zavala, son of Juan B. and Ivette I. Zavala of the 3600 block of Bessie Street, recently received a certificate of commendation for superior performance of duty while assigned aboard the aircraft carrier America. Zavala is a 1991 graduate of Norview High School.
Navy Fireman Apprentice Christopher O. Dawson, son of Rosa L. and Willie J. Dawson Sr. of the 1300 block of Olinger Street, was promoted to his present rank while serving aboard the guided missile cruiser Anzio. A 1989 graduate of Lake Taylor High School, Dawson joined the Navy in March 1994.
Army Warrant Officer Susan A. Cervantes, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles V. Patnode of the 700 block of Euwanee Place, was promoted to her present rank upon completion of Warrant Officer Candidate School at Fort Rucker, Ala. A 1982 graduate of Granby High School, Cervantes joined the Army in January 1984.
Marine Lance Cpl. Austin C. Egley, a 1993 graduate of Maury High School, was promoted to his present rank while serving with 3rd Assault Amphibian Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Marine Corps Base, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick D. West, son of Eva N. Mosley of the 1500 block of W. 40th St., has been selected as Instructor of the Year with Naval Technical Training Center Detachment at Goodfellow Air Force Base, Texas.
CAMPUS NOTES
Aaron Miller of Norfolk is the recipient of the 1995 $1,000 Wal-Mart Foundation community scholarship, which is awarded each spring by local Wal-Marts to college-bound high school seniors.
Aaron, a senior at Norfolk Catholic, plans to attend Duke University in Durham, N.C.
