Kathy L. Haygood arrived from England with her husband this past fall to become the third clinical supervisor in speech-language pathology at Old Dominion University's Child Study Center's Speech and Hearing Clinic.
She describes her job as ``lots of fun.''
``I love it at ODU,'' Haygood said. ``It's a wonderful place to work and a wonderful place to learn. It's my first experience with teaching, supervising and working with adult students.''
The new lectureship position was made available by a $680,000 trust administered by the Aphasia Foundation of Virginia in the names of Norfolk residents Jesse and Loleta White. Aphasia is defined as the total or partial loss of the power to use and understand words.
The new position is responsible for supervising undergraduate and graduate students at ODU as they learn to become speech-language pathologists.
``The additional position allows for better quality supervision and better quality training for our students,'' Haygood said. ``We can take more clients because of that, but that's not a goal that we're looking for.''
According to Haygood, the public may call the center and ask for a diagnostic evaluation or therapy for themselves or their children if they already know that they need that line of service.
``We see children with language impairments, with speech impairments, voice and fluency difficulties, adults who have English as a second language ... for ages ranging from 2-year-olds to adults in their 40s and 50s,'' Haygood said.
The speech pathology program has been at ODU for several years, but according to I.M. Baker Jr., founder and president of the Aphasia Foundation, the lectureship is the ``culmination of a longtime effort to establish a position in the field of childhood aphasia.'' ILLUSTRATION: Photo
