Norfolk Mayor Paul Fraim joined a local service organization in honoring a Norfolk civic league leader with its outstanding service award last week.
The Norfolk Sertoma Club on March 1 presented its annual ``Service to Mankind'' award to John E. Roger, president of the Bayview Civic League.
John Eppler, president of the Sertoma Club, and Fraim jointly presented the award to Roger during a luncheon ceremony.
Established in 1951, the Norfolk Sertoma Club annually recognizes a Norfolk citizen who exemplifies the meaning of Sertoma, which translates as ``Service to Mankind.''
Roger was honored for his tireless efforts to organize and assist other civic leagues in Norfolk, Eppler said. The award also recognizes the work of Roger's wife, Virginia, who teams up with her husband in civic league activities.
Under Roger's leadership, the Bayview Civic League has motivated Bayview residents to use neighborly persuasion with other residents to encourage them to repair their homes and abate structural blight.
Roger's civic league is an active participant in Frame's recently launched community outreach program, which is designed to move Norfolk city government closer to city residents.
The Norfolk Sertoma Club mainly sponsors area charities that provide speech and hearing services, Eppler said. It also supports other community causes. by CNB
